Wow what a year it has been! I traveled to Europe for the first time, I finished my first year in a new major, and I officially moved to campus in an apartment. A lot has changed, but that is alright because it is good change.
At the beginning of this school year, I was a nervous student in the middle of a college transfer who felt they didn't really have a home. I wasn't an education major anymore but I wasn't an engineering major yet. I was unsure of my decision to switch because classes were substantially harder than before. I was unprepared and scared.
After I moved into my apartment and met my roommate, things began to change. I was doing better in classes and I was starting to make new friends. Things really improved Spring semester when I started to take engineering courses that focused on what I want to do. I started to feel more at home and like I had made the right choice.
I took classes that were important for my new major, but I also had some AP credits allowing me to take fun classes at UC. I was able to take an Honors study tour to Austria. In this class I could put engineering aside and focus on one of my passions--music. It was my first time to Europe and really quite a delightful experience. Read more about this class in a tab above!
Perhaps the most rewarding part of it all was my final grade report at the end of Spring semester. I finished with all A's. This was reassuring that I had made the right decision to switch majors. I joined SWE (society for women engineers) and traveled to Nashville with them. I formed new friend groups and was starting to lay the path for my future in engineering.
This year has been tough, but it taught me a lot about myself. I can be a strong independent woman and also a determined student. First semester was rough and I learned to put more effort into my classes in order to maintain the standards I have set for myself. After the 2015/2016 school year, I feel more confident than ever. Next year begins my first co-op rotation which will bring whole new experiences: real work, getting paid, and taking classes in the summer! I am excited and nervous, but most importantly I am ready.
