What is Gateway to University Honors?
During the fall 2014 semester, I took the Gateway to University Honors course that serves as the main introduction to the honors program. This course presented me with the ways that the university’s honors program can help assist me in the future, achieve goals, be a life-long learner, and seek opportunities outside of my focus.
What did I learn in this course?
Gateway to University Honors is a required course for all first year students that does not count toward an honors experience. That being said, it does not mean this course was not helpful. Gateway, which is led by a university honors advisor, provided me with tools to use in my future experiences as a Bearcat in the honors program. I was impressed by the number of helpful staff members from the university that gave presentations (Nationally Competitive Awards, Upper-Class Honors students, coordinator of special projects within the honors program, etc.) During this course, we learned how to apply what we learn at UC and in the honors program into the world to help improve upon the issues people face every day. We discovered our passions and how exactly to maintain a focus on those while studying something that may not be our passion.
How can I apply this knowledge to my future?
Using the knowledge attained in Gateway, I will strive to be more aware of my experiences at UC and how every experience I have will shape my future, help me to achieve my goals, and help nurture my passions. One of the main aspects about the honors program is that it encourages me to be a more reflective person. I will take this into my future high school classroom and encourage my future students to be insightful with their actions because this helps to explain some of life’s events, and helps to cherish moments (good and bad) for as long as those moments last.
