Spring break is over, and I am now back in classes, which means I am home from Austria!! What a wonderful experience it was. I was traveling in Austria for a study tour class taken through the UC Honors Program.
What is Music in Vienna?
During the spring 2016 semester, I took a class offered by the honors program that focused on music. As previously described on another page, one of my biggest passions is music; therefore, this class was very interesting to me. The class mainly focuses on music from the 18th and 19th centuries and its composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, Brahms, etc. Something that connects all of these influential composers is Vienna. They all lived and worked in Vienna during some point in their lives--making it a perfect place to visit.
What did I learn in this course?
After taking this class, I learned how important it is to maintain my learning in music. Broadening my knowledge of musical terms and learning how to academically write about music are main focuses of this class. One aspect that I really appreciate about this class is the listening portion of homework. The class is offered through CCM, which is out of my home college. Getting out of my engineering classes is extremely important to me because I appreciate a balance. Taking this class provides a nice balance between math, science, and the arts, and helps to encourage travel to new places!
How can I apply this knowledge to my future?
Using the knowledge from this class, I can look at music from a more analytical lens--this being the main focus of the class. However, after this class, I will also look at other aspects of life from a broader lens. Because there was a study abroad portion to this class, I was able to see a part of the world I never have before. While abroad, the Brussels attacks took place causing fear in us but also our families. We were representing not only the university, but also the United States. So how will this knowledge and experience affect my future? This is important to the takeaway from this class because it taught us to be extra vigilant, cautious, and mature. Looking at music from an analytical lens is important, but not just for music. How can I analyze other aspects of life with the same detail? Understanding concepts through multiple ways is extremely important (in this class..understanding music through reading and listening). This directly relates to engineering because the more times I interact with a topic, the more I will understand it.
Example of my classwork:
Below is the link to an artifact (example of my work) from Music in Vienna. This is a paper analyzing a scene from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
