Year in Review (2018-2019)
Wow this year really flew by! I cannot believe it is summer already, and I only have one year left. College has been a windy road with a few twists and turns (changing my major twice) but eventually I got to where I am supposed to be.
This year I completed my first round of student teaching at Colerain High School in their math department. I was with freshmen and juniors, teaching algebra 1, precalc/trigonometry, and statistics. I learned so much from this experience and it really validated those few times I changed my major. I love spending my days with children, and really enjoy learning from them and with them.
I recently got my placement for student teaching which begins in August! I will be at Walnut Hills High School in the Cincinnati Public school district. I could not be more excited for this opportunity and am so ready to get started!! I will be joining the school in August for professional development days and then I will be there every day learning alongside the kids!
This past school year was really focused on learning, in my own classrooms at UC and as a student teacher in a high school classroom. To have that parallel learning experience was truly valuable and I think I learned just as much from my professors at UC (both math and education professors), as I did from Colerain. Nearing the end of my program, the five of us in math education have gotten really close and know our professors well. While the last few college math courses may be gruelingly difficult, the professors understand that we are education majors and they give us a whole different perspective on what it's like to be a teacher. This school year also brought me two semesters on the Dean's List, which is a pretty nice way to go into senior year! I also made the decision to add a second major, so next Spring I will graduate with a degree in Secondary Math Education, Spanish, and a certificate in Spanish translation.
After this year I really feel like I built relationships and strengthened others with my classmates and professors. I cannot wait for August to come so I can get into a new school environment at Walnut Hills! After this semester, the next time a first day of school starts it will be my first day as an officially certified math teacher!! (That is still so crazy for me to think about, but ahh!!!)
Looking into my senior year I hope to build more lasting friendships and learn from the best UC and Walnut Hills has to offer. I hope the year is fast, but the memories are forever. Lets go Cats 2020!
